12 Months to a Better You

After the clouds of confetti have fallen welcoming the New Year, here comes the time to start thinking about how you want to make this year even better than last. This feels like a perfect time to turn a new page in your life.

Researchers who have studied the success rates of New Year’s Resolutions have found that usually, the first week goes beautifully as people are motivated to attain their goals. Things start backsliding by February. By December, they’re back to where they started or further behind!

Taking small steps forward throughout the entire year will keep your aspirations in sight and attainable. Spread your wings, make a small change each month to make 2018 your most fulfilling year to date.

January: Save Money

After splurging during the holiday season, try to save during the first month of the New year. Start new investment schemes, invest in property, share etc., cancel subscriptions or memberships you’re not using, cut down on eating out, avail discount coupons, save your shopping for sale periods etc.

February: Practice Mindfulness
Take some time out for yourself. Unplug more. Writing down your thoughts in a journal, cooking, and talking to a loved one can help eliminate stress. Take a day off from social media every week, meditate every morning, take a walk in nature, unwind at a spa - Do what you love and savour life.

March: Explore the nature
Tired of roaming around in the malls and food joints in town? Explore nature’s hidden gems, take a trip to the vast deserts, the hilly terrains or the beach side. Take a break from life’s mundanity and appreciate the wonders of nature.

April: Learn to say YES
…and make it a habit so it becomes your lifestyle. If someone offers you an amazing opportunity to do something and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes. Then learn how to do it later.

Sometimes saying no can just be comfortable. By saying “no” to opportunities, we reject many of life’s brilliant chances. These are often disguised as a new
career prospect, an opportunity to step up at work, a surprise request from a friend, or any type of unfamiliar challenge. Saying yes will often yield you much better results in the long run.

May: Get a new Hobby
Having a hobby is a great way to relieve stress or boredom and is a creative outlet and a way to meet new people. They allow you to do something that’s just for you, that can help you unwind after a hard day and give you a lot of pleasure. You could learn photography, cook, paint, read books, binge watch TV shows etc.

June: Learn a new skill

Download an app like Duolingo to learn a new language, Codeacademy for programming languages, etc. You could take a short course on any skill you’ve always wanted to learn.

July: Cut out a bad habit

According to researchers on an average it takes about 21 days to break a bad habit. You can replace your bad habit with something like replacing biting your nails to chewing gum. Find the root of your bad habit and try to replace it with a substitute. It’s easier to get rid of your bad habit if you join forces with someone who’s trying to get rid of the same habit. This way you can both help each other, hold each other accountable and celebrate your victories together.

August: Try something new

This could be anything, you could try a new cuisine, you could switch up your workout routine, visit a place you’ve never visited, instead of going to the movies go hiking, join a book club so you can read new books etc. This can help you to overcome your fear of breaking routine, get to know yourself better and just have fun.

September: Be Eco Friendly
Making a resolution to help save our planet is a great idea! Every step counts. You can start opting for paper bags or cloth bags over plastic bags, turning off the lights when not in use, recycling paper and glass, reuse items before throwing them out. Partner with socially-responsible enterprises and contribute towards a good cause. You can also use public transportation like buses or metros to reduce carbon footprints.

October: Get Organised
Digitize your documents and back them up so you can get rid of the paper copies and are stored safely. Purge your home for expired or unnecessary items, get rid of them. Create to do lists and make a note of important deadlines and things so you stay on track. Clean your house or work desk regularly, sort everything, label and keep everything in place so you know what goes where.

November: Eat healthy
Get rid of salty and sugary snacks and replace them with fruits and vegetables. Drink fruit and vegetable smoothies for breakfast to reach your daily serving. Go meatless at least one day a week.

December: Practice Generosity
During the season of gift giving, the best thing you could give anyone is your time. Seek out local volunteering opportunities to help bring joy to those who need the added support. If you don’t have any time to spare you could donate money to a charity organization that supports a cause you’re interested.

Make your New Year a success by following these monthly resolutions to make yourself a better you. If it’s not the beginning of the year anymore, you can jump to wherever you are and loop back at the end of the year.
